Reaching Niseko is easier than you might think. Once you’ve arrived in Japan, there are several simple ways to make your way north to Hokkaido’s snow-covered mountains. Below, we’ve outlined the most common routes to help you plan a smooth, stress-free journey.

Arriving in Tokyo

Tokyo serves as Japan’s main international gateway, handling more than 80% of overseas arrivals. The city’s two airports - Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT) - connect directly to Hokkaido, home of Niseko’s world-famous slopes.

Flying via Haneda is generally the quickest way to continue north, while Narita often offers slightly lower fares but requires longer transfers and has fewer late-night domestic options.

Landing at Haneda Airport (HND)

Haneda is Tokyo’s most central airport, located just 30 minutes from downtown by train. It’s open 24 hours, but domestic connections typically finish by early evening. If you arrive after 20:00–21:00, it’s best to spend the night nearby.

Travellers arriving earlier can stay overnight in one of Haneda’s connected airport hotels or explore Tokyo before flying to Hokkaido the next day.

Landing at Narita Airport (NRT)

Narita sits 60–90 minutes east of central Tokyo and remains a major hub for international carriers.

If your flight lands after 19:30, plan to stay overnight - the First Cabin Capsule Hotel inside Terminal 1 is a convenient, budget-friendly option before your next morning flight to Hokkaido.

Flying to Hokkaido (New Chitose Airport, CTS)

From Tokyo, a short domestic flight will take you to New Chitose Airport, the gateway to Hokkaido and the closest major airport to Niseko. The flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Domestic Airlines

Japan’s main airlines operate frequent flights between Tokyo and New Chitose. Listed roughly from higher to lower average fares:

Japan Airlines (JAL) · All Nippon Airways (ANA) · Air Do · Skymark · Peach Aviation · Jetstar Japan

Advance-booked return fares typically range from ¥28,000 – ¥62,000, depending on airline, season, and demand. Prices rise closer to departure, especially on weekends and public holidays.

International Flights to New Chitose

Although most visitors connect through Tokyo, New Chitose Airport also receives direct international flights, especially during the winter months. These are ideal for travellers from nearby Asian cities such as Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Bangkok.

From December 2025, Qantas will also begin operating a seasonal direct flight from Sydney, offering Australian travellers a convenient new option to reach Niseko without a domestic connection.

Travelling from New Chitose Airport to Niseko

Once you land in Hokkaido, there are several easy ways to reach Niseko. Before arranging transfers, check with your Niseko Central concierge to assist with bookings.

SkyExpress

The fastest and most comfortable option is a private or group transfer with SkyExpress, Niseko’s longest-running transport provider.

Offering door-to-door service between New Chitose, Sapporo, and Niseko, SkyExpress vehicles can accommodate up to 35 passengers - perfect for families or groups travelling with ski gear.

Resort Liner

Running from December through March, Resort Liner coaches connect New Chitose, Sapporo, and Niseko. Drop-offs are available at major hotels and the Hirafu Welcome Centre.

Seats are limited, so advance reservations are recommended during peak winter periods.

By Train

The train is the most affordable way to reach Niseko but requires one transfer. The JR Station is located directly beneath the airport terminal - purchase a JR ticket (cash only) to Kutchan, Niseko-Hirafu’s nearest town.

Withdraw cash from airport ATMs before boarding (decline currency conversion for better rates).

The journey takes about 3.5 hours, including a transfer at Otaru Station - simply cross to the opposite platform for your connection.

From Kutchan Station, local winter buses (listed on Google Maps and Apple Maps) run directly to the resort and accept contactless cards.

The last train departs around 17:30. Allow an hour after landing to collect luggage and purchase tickets. If arriving later, consider staying overnight at the Air Terminal Hotel or nearby Sapporo City before continuing the next morning.

Takkyubin Courier Service

For a lighter journey, use Yamato Transport’s “Takkyubin” counter, located to the right of the New Chitose Airport exit.

It can deliver ski equipment and luggage directly to your Niseko accommodation within 1–2 days, for about ¥4,000 per bag (cash only).
Similar services are available from Tokyo airports but take longer and cost more.
